Relax! God put the wiggle in children; don’t feel you have to suppress all of their energy in God’s house. All are welcome and we welcome the children most of all! We believe every one at church is here on purpose — and that includes the children attending worship.
You don’t have to sit in the back. Think about sitting toward the front where it is easier for your little ones to see and hear what’s going on at the altar. Seeing only the backs of the heads of the adults in front of them is boring!
Quietly explain the parts of the worship service, the actions of the Pastor, acolytes (the candle lighters) and choir. Sing the hymns, pray, and speak the responses. Children learn to worship by copying you. If you have to leave the service with your child, feel free to do so, but please come back as soon as you can. As Jesus said, “Let the little children come to me”.
We provide different Sunday School experiences at 9:40 and 11:00. Both encourage children to find their way closer to God while equipping them with the necessary tools to face worldly issues.
Parents get weekly cue cards to help them lead discussions with their children throughout the week to reinforce what they learned in their large and small group time. Online games and resources are also available to take that discussion further. From the time your child is born until they graduate high school, you only have 940 weekends with them. Let’s come together to make those weekends count!
We recognize that the first understanding that infants and young children have of Christ’s Church is through their experience in the nursery. Our witness to our children is to provide a sanctuary in which they can experience God’s world through their senses. They will hear calm, happy voices and be stimulated through conversation. They will see a bright, inviting room with toys and feel comfortable in touching and exploring the nursery rooms and its contents. They will be surrounded and comforted by people of faith: nursery caregivers, church staff and members of the congregation.
A professionally staffed nursery is provided on Sunday Mornings and for many other events. Nursery care is for ages birth to five years. Childcare is provided, by reservation, through the nursery for Bible studies, committee meetings and during special events.
Giving all people compassion and inclusion is what the Bible tells us God wants from us, so why should it be any different for our special needs community? We are ALL God’s children no matter our physical or mental capabilities and therefore Compass Coach Ministries is now actively working in our church to serve the children & youth with special needs while they are on this spiritual growth journey.
There Compass Coach is a volunteer that is available to help smooth the path of the sometimes challenging and over-stimulating environment of Sunday School, Vacation Bible School and Wednesday Evening Activities. This person goes through general behavior management training and has a heart for God’s children. Each Coach is paired with a child that has a need for this additional guidance, so that the child is equipped to succeed. When the typical classroom continues to be over-stimulating and causes the child to become anxious, the Creation Station Classroom is available for the child to continue with Bible instruction while in a more comfortable setting.
We are blessed to have members of the Special Needs Council who offer professional advice from the areas of counseling, special needs education and early childhood education along with other individuals who share a love for children. We are also in the process of building a resource center within the church: books, online materials and local listings of support groups and professional contacts. As the Compass Coach Ministry grows, we look towards God’s direction on how we can best assist youth and adults.
More more information about our Compass Coach Ministry please download the brochure. Any family that would like their child or youth to be paired with a Compass Coach Compass Coach should contact the Director of Children’s Ministries, to find out more about this program.
We also hosts a support group for parents who have children with special needs. This group meets the fourth Monday of each month from 7-8 pm. Childcare is available upon request; please give us 72 hour notice before the meeting so that proper staffing levels are met. Please contact Lynn Cagle to arrange childcare. The Child Information Form is required.
